Articles About Geologic Hydrogen
(Geologic Hydrogen is also referred to as Gold, Natural, White, and Orange Hydrogen)

There is a global effort underway to mine geologic hydrogen. To view some articles about it, visit:

a) Geologists Are Predicting a Natural Hydrogen “Gold Rush” By ZeroHedge – Feb 21, 2024

    • A US Geological Survey study reveals the Earth holds over 5 trillion tons of geologic hydrogen, challenging previous assumptions about its accessibility.
    • Geologists report finding hydrogen reserves in various locations, including in Albania and Spain, with the potential for significant production.
    • “Gold hydrogen,” extracted from natural reserves, is touted as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods, sparking interest from energy firms and investors worldwide.
    • “Most hydrogen is likely inaccessible, but a few percent recovery would still supply all projected demand — 500 million tons a year — for hundreds of years,” said Geoffrey Ellis, a USGS research geologist, as reported by the Financial Times.

Capturing naturally occurring and renewable hydrogen is not always commercially viable.
One of these companies, Denver-based Koloma, is backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures and the Vancouver clean-tech venture capital firm Evok Innovations. Koloma recently raised $330 million in a Series B raise this February.

d) Geoscientist: Natural hydrogen: the new frontier, Mar 1, 2022
Geological hydrogen could revolutionize our low-carbon future. Philip J. Ball and Krystian Czado report on discussions of this little-understood resource during the first international summit on natural hydrogen exploration

Governments are certainly taking notice. In Australia, for instance, the South Australian government added hydrogen to the list of regulated substances in 2021, allowing companies like Gold Hydrogen to apply for exploration permits. In February this year, the US Department of Energy announced $20 million in research grants to 16 projects to advance geologic hydrogen exploration. Last December, French President Emmanuel Macron promised “massive funding” to explore the potential of white hydrogen.
