c) The presentation video shown above briefly outlines a way to accelerate the global energy transition by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, and hydrogen extracted from the Earth, which we at ClimateSAN refer to as Geologic Hydrogen. It begins with a graph showing the rising atmospheric CO2 levels from this graph of the Monthly Average CO2 level at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii.  Since the amount of CO2 emissions are continuing to increase, it appears that total energy demand is rising faster than renewable energy generation.  As a result, much greater climate action is required, which is summed up by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, who said, “Our world needs climate action on all fronts — everything, everywhere, all at once”.

1) Introduction:

The world has a very limited time to reduce its emissions sufficiently to prevent the Earth from passing some key tipping points.  In 2023, the University of Exeter’s Global Systems Institute, with the support of more than 200 researchers from over 90 organisations in 26 countries, published a report called Global Tipping Points Report 2023.  In this report, they indicate that “Harmful tipping points in the natural world pose some of the gravest threats faced by humanity. Their triggering will severely damage our planet’s life-support systems and threaten the stability of our societies.“.  In their latest report, Global Tipping Points Report 2025, they indicate that Earth’s first catastrophic climate tipping point has been reached, with coral reefs facing ‘widespread dieback’.  To view a more complete summary about the urgent need for scaling up climate action, visit: Some Key Facts About the Urgent Need to Accelerate the Global Energy Transition.

Fortunately, AI is improving quickly and now has a wide range of capabilities that can be utilized by millions of organizations around the world to help develop and implement many climate action projects. In addition, it can process a vast amount of data to help identify the best areas to explore for and utilize Geologic Hydrogen. Given below are some examples:
    • Identify potential profitable projects that can produce renewable energy, renewable fuels, and/or increase energy efficiency.
    • Identify appropriate technology suppliers and their contact information.
    • Identify potential off-takers and their contact information for a product or products produced by a project, such as green methanol.
    • Provide online links to references that enable organizations to verify the information generated by AI.
    • Estimate the profitability and expected cash flow of a proposed project.
    • Process available data to identify the best areas to explore for and utilize Geologic Hydrogen.

6) More information about Geologic Hydrogen:

a) Recently, a US government agency prepared a major report about a relatively new clean energy resource that can be utilized on a very large scale.  This clean energy resource is extracted directly from the earth and has been given multiple names, including geologic, natural, white and gold hydrogen.  This agency is called the US Geological Survey and has estimated that the earth holds over five trillion tonnes of this type of hydrogen in underground pockets, which is an extremely large amount.  They also indicated that a few percent recovery of this amount would still supply all the projected demand for hundreds of years.

b) There is already a commercial site producing geologic hydrogen near Bourakébougou, Mali.  It started production in 2014. Geologists have reported that they have found or are soon expecting to find geologic hydrogen reserves in various locations, including Canada, the US, Australia, France, Albania, and Spain.  As a result, geologists are predicting a natural hydrogen Gold Rush!

c) Other exploration companies in the U.S. and Canada are also working on geologic hydrogen. One of these companies, Denver-based Koloma, is backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures and the Vancouver clean-tech venture capital firm Evok Innovations. Koloma recently raised $330 million in a Series B raise in 2024.

d) Geologists Are Predicting a Natural Hydrogen “Gold Rush” By ZeroHedge – Feb 21, 2024

      • A US Geological Survey study reveals the Earth holds over 5 trillion tons of geologic hydrogen, challenging previous assumptions about its accessibility.
      • Geologists report finding hydrogen reserves in various locations, including in Albania and Spain, with the potential for significant production.
      • “Gold hydrogen,” extracted from natural reserves, is touted as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods, sparking interest from energy firms and investors worldwide.
      • “Most hydrogen is likely inaccessible, but a few percent recovery would still supply all projected demand — 500 million tons a year — for hundreds of years,” said Geoffrey Ellis, a USGS research geologist, as reported by the Financial Times.
